OPD is a central clinic to which patients requiring an expert opinion can be referred for specialist consultation.
Nurses in OPD work with a variety of clinic specialties. It is the responsibility of the key clinic nurse to ensure that all clinic requirements are met and to prepare and manage the clinic.
This involves:
Ensuring all relevant data available in patients’ notes; Obtaining relevant imaging reports; Ensuring imaging available either on PACS or film; Obtaining results from investigations; Ensuring equipment is available; Preparing the patient and being an advocate for her/him; Checking communication needs, e.g. interpreter required Advanced MAP and computer skills are essential.
